Member Spotlight – December 2019

Full Name: Jillian Scholten

Current Placement(s) in the JLLB? New Member Training Committee (Committee Member)

What year did you join the JLLB? How many years is that? This is my first active year in the JLLB. I joined as a new member in the Spring (early 2019).

Where did you go to school and what degrees do you hold? I graduated from Chapman University in 2008 with a degree in Public Relations and Advertising.
What do you do outside the League as a job? Tell us all your jobs both professional and other places you volunteer. I am the Senior Public Relations Manager for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN). Outside of JLLB, I’m a member of the For Goodness Cakes “Sprinkle Squad.” For Goodness Cakes partners with agencies around LA and Orange County to provide birthday cakes for foster kids and at-risk youth.

What city did you grow up and how’d you end up in Long Beach? I grew up in Laguna Niguel in Orange County. Since college, I’ve slowly moved further north (Orange, Huntington Beach and now Long Beach for the past 5 years). Of all the cities I’ve ever lived in, Long Beach definitely feels like home. Now, Long Beach is the perfect location as I commute up to Manhattan Beach for work while my husband commutes down to Irvine.

Why did you join the JLLB? When I found the JLLB, I was looking for a place where I could invest my time on a more consistent basis and have an impact my the community. My mom was a member of the Orange County Junior League chapter many years ago, so I began researching the org. I had actually just looked at the JLLB website a week or two prior, when I had a random conversation with a colleague (Kaley Milan) at work who mentioned that she had recently joined. It felt like fate.

What keeps you staying in the JLLB? Even in my short time with the JLLB, I have seen the impact this amazing group of women makes on Long Beach and I feel grateful to be part of that. I look forward to the many opportunities the Junior League will bring me to grow both as a person and in service to my community.

What are your hobbies / what do you like to do for fun? I love traveling to see new places or visit friends/family, so you typically won’t find me here on any given long weekend. When I’m home though, you can find me at El Dorado Dog Park with my husband (Derek) and pup (Nola).

If you could have one superpower what would it be and why? If I had a superpower, I would want to be able to teleport. I have friends and family around the country and I would love to be able to pop in for dinner or even for a quick hug anytime I wanted!
