Member Spotlight – February 2023

This month’s member spotlight is Katharine Carr! She is celebrating her fifth year with the Junior League of Long Beach and is serving as the Fundraising Events Chair. Katharine was already an active volunteer but wanted to be more connected to the community. She joined the Junior League of Long Beach because it seemed very organized and she found that it not only provided the community and fellowship she was looking for, but also provided concrete training that would benefit her career and her other volunteer work.

Katharine grew up in Torrance, but moved to the Central Coast to attend college where she earned a BS in Soil Science with a minor in Environmental Remediation from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. However, she loves the culture of SoCal and Long Beach and since this is the best place to be for her industry, she returned to the area and her hometown of Torrance.

Katharine is a registered professional geologist with the State of California and works at AECOM in environmental remediation and clean water work. Katharine finds it interesting that both she and her sister pursued careers in the sciences despite having parents who were both artists and provided them with lots of acting, dancing, and music classes growing up. In her spare time, Katharine likes “wandering around in nature just looking at stuff.” She also enjoys gardening, soccer, and reading historical novels. She was a founding board member for Feed and Be Fed Urban garden in San Pedro, currently serves on the board for Wayfarers Chapter, and is a regular volunteer for Bunny World Foundation (Rabbit rescue). “I am continually inspired by the members that I meet through the League. It’s been fun to find out that my friends whom I admire but who live out of state or in other parts of CA, have all joined the Junior League independently!”
